2017
Foundation of Ion DNA
Ion DNA Electric Vehicles was founded with a vision to revolutionise the Australian electric vehicle market. And a goal to fundamentally change the Australian mototing landscape by showcasing a full spectrum of electric mobility, from e-scooters to cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles.
2018
Australia's First Dedicated EV Showroom
Introduced our first EV on mass, the Nissan Leaf, through independent import. This sparked the beginning of affordable and accessible electric motoring to Australian drivers, paving the way for a new era in sustainable transportation.
2019
Further reach into Global Markets
Partnered with the UK to expand the independent supply of EV models and transitioned our long-standing parent company to focus solely on electric vehicles. This move supported early adopting industry clients and fleets, accelerating EV adoption across Australia.
2021
Real Choice for Australian Motorists
Pioneered the introduction of the Honda, VW, Peugeot, and commercial electric vans to Australia, well ahead of the lagging timelines of international automakers. Futher expanded our lineup to include a range of electric scooters and motorcycles.
2023
East Coast Retail Expansion
Building on the success of our Canberra showroom, we launched our Illawarra retail site alongside our longstanding industry-facing business. This expansion enhanced our service to fleet clients and introduced more independently sourced models, including Vauxhall and Ford.
2024
Achieving Mainstream
After years of collaboration with government on national and state EV policy, we played a pivotal role in introducing the NEVS and; the establishment of a burgeoning pre-owned EV market. Our strong relationships with fleet operators and governments have been key to this success and bring us to the excting, transformative space we are in today.
How it All Began
Ion DNA began in 2017 with a shared passion for innovation, a drive for a cleaner future, and a commitment to creating something better for Australian drivers. Founded by husband-and-wife team Rob and Jaeme Ogilvie, the business was inspired by their children’s encouragement to transform the automotive industry they had been part of for decades into something exciting, modern, sustainable and truly customer-focused.
Rob’s career is a dynamic blend of leadership and hands-on expertise. A renowned national race and rally driver, he developed a deep understanding of vehicle performance and engineering, further honed through years in motorsport development, workshop operations, and extensive vehicle testing and certification for automotive brands.
His leadership roles as Chair of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (ACT Branch) and longest-serving President of the Registered Automotive Workshop Scheme (RAWS) Association have made him a go-to trusted voice in the Australian EV industry and, he works extensively with governments at all levels to develop and implement effective EV policies and incentives.
On the daily, Rob’s key focus is on managing the exponential growth of Ion DNA’s Illawarra based industry-facing parent company which provides cutting-edge solutions for manufacturers, businesses and fleet operators.
Jaeme, a nurse by background, brings over 25 years of experience in fleet project management, customer service, and brand development. Renowned for her ability to deliver seamless and welcoming customer experiences, she is widely recognised for providing Australia’s best EV deliveries.
At either Ion DNA’s Canberra or Illawarra store, you’ll find her working closely with clients, ensuring every customer finds the perfect EV to suit their needs. Her leadership has also built a dedicated team that shares her passion for making the EV journey stress-free, exciting, and empowering.
Rob and Jaeme launched Ion DNA as Australia’s first dedicated EV dealership well ahead of the mainstream market, fostering a relaxed, no-pressure buying environment and a business built on integrity and expertise.
